Bangladesh Inflation Rate Edges Higher
In March 2025, Bangladesh's annual inflation rate saw a slight increase, rising to 9.35% from February's nearly two-year low of 9.32%. Among the sectors contributing to this uptick, transportation costs accelerated, showing an increase from 6.15% in February to 6.69%. Clothing and footwear experienced a notable rise from 10.33% to 14.7%. Similarly, prices for furnishings, household equipment, and routine household maintenance climbed from 8.2% to 8.52%. The health sector also saw an increase, with costs rising to 4.77% from 4.28%. Communication costs edged up slightly to 9.65% from 9.49%, while expenses for recreation and culture increased from 6.79% to 7.72%. Restaurants and hotels saw a marginal rise from 11.96% to 12%.
Conversely, some areas experienced moderated costs: food and non-alcoholic beverages decreased from 9.24% to 8.93%; housing and utilities saw a reduction to 8.21% from 8.67%; the alcoholic beverages and tobacco category fell significantly from 25.97% to 23.43%; and miscellaneous goods and services declined to 12.3% from 13.62%. On a monthly scale, consumer prices in March 2025 rose by 1.29%, marking a recovery from the previous month's 0.15% decline and representing the most substantial monthly increase since October 2024.
