Brazil Industrial Sector Performance Disappoints
In February 2025, Brazil experienced a slight decline in industrial production, which decreased by 0.1% compared to the previous month. This decline came after a stagnant performance in January and did not meet market expectations of a 0.5% increase. Out of the 25 industrial sectors assessed, 14 reported a reduction in output. The pharmaceutical and chemical products sector suffered the most significant decrease, dropping by 12.3%. Other sectors contributing to the negative trend included machinery and equipment (-2.7%), wood products (-8.6%), miscellaneous products (-5.9%), motor vehicles, trailers, and bodies (-0.7%), electrical machinery, equipment, and materials (-1.4%), computer equipment, electronic and optical products (-1.5%), and furniture (-2.1%). Conversely, 11 sectors reported increased production, with extractive industries and food products showing the most notable gains of 2.7% and 1.7% respectively. On a year-on-year basis, industrial production increased by 1.5% in February, which followed a downward revision of January's growth to 1.3% and fell short of market predictions of 2.3% growth.
