Bulgaria Trade Deficit Widens in August
In August 2025, Bulgaria's trade deficit significantly increased to BGN 1,095.4 million, compared to BGN 660.7 million in the same month of the previous year. This expansion in deficit was driven primarily by a decline in exports surpassing the fall in imports. Export figures saw a year-on-year decrease of 10.2%, falling to BGN 6,496.9 million, with significant drops in shipments to the EU by 11.4% and to non-EU countries by 8.1%. Conversely, imports decreased at a milder rate of 2.8%, totaling BGN 7,592.3 million, largely due to reduced purchases from non-EU countries, which dropped by 7%. However, imports from EU countries edged up by 0.9%. For the period from January to August, the trade deficit widened considerably to BGN 11,640.7 million, up from BGN 6,621.4 million in the same period of the previous year. This was attributed to a 5.5% decrease in exports alongside a 2.8% increase in imports.
