In August 2025, building permits across Canada decreased by 1.2%, totaling CAD 11.6 billion. This decline was mainly attributed to reduced intentions in the residential construction sector. Specifically, the residential sector saw a drop of CAD 173.8 million, or 2.4%, reaching CAD 7.0 billion. This decrease was due to a reduction in single-family permits by CAD 112.3 million to CAD 2.5 billion, alongside a decrease in multi-family project intentions by CAD 61.5 million to CAD 4.5 billion. Overall, the approval for housing units comprised 20,500 multi-family and 4,100 single-family dwellings, reflecting a 0.9% decrease from the previous month. On the other hand, non-residential permits experienced a slight increase of CAD 34.6 million, or 0.8%, amounting to CAD 4.6 billion, propelled by a CAD 211.3 million rise in institutional projects while commercial and industrial segments witnessed declines of CAD 134.0 million and CAD 42.6 million, respectively. Provincially, significant reductions in Ontario (down CAD 563.3 million) and Alberta (down CAD 461.5 million) were counterbalanced by increases in British Columbia (up CAD 612.2 million) and Quebec (up CAD 294.2 million).
